Après des débuts difficiles, suite à la mort accidentelle de sa mère et de son père adoptif, et un premier album au succès mitigé, Shania Twain rencontre en juin 1993 le producteur Robert John Mutt Lange, qu'elle épouse le 28 décembre 1993. Le premier album né de cette collaboration, The Woman in Me, connaît un succès immédiat mais elle ne sera reconnue comme vedette mondiale qu'avec la sortie de son troisième album Come on Over. Come On Over est devenu l’album le plus vendu de tous les temps par une chanteuse et l'album le plus vendu de l’histoire de la musique country.
Elle est la seule chanteuse à avoir obtenu trois disques de diamants ; deux pour Come on Over et un pour The Woman in Me aux États-Unis, certifiés par la Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Elle est la deuxième chanteuse canadienne en termes de vente d’albums aux États-Unis derrière Céline Dion. Le 8 novembre 2004, la RIAA certifie 20 millions d'exemplaires pour l'album Come on Over, établissant un record pour une chanteuse.
Depuis 1995, Shania Twain est récompensée par la critique et ses ventes records de disques. Elle a remporté de nombreuses récompenses dont cinq Grammy Awards et, selon son site officiel, a vendu plus de 80 millions d’albums dans le monde. Aux États-Unis, ses albums sont certifiés à hauteur de 48 millions d'exemplaire vendus.

It has sold over 40 million copies worldwide and is the 9th best-selling album in the U.S. Her 4th album, titled Up! was released late 2002. To date it has sold 20 million copies worldwide.
A five-time Grammy Award winner, Twain has also achieved major success as a songwriter, winning 27 BMI Songwriter awards. Twain is one of the first country artists to achieve major crossover success in pop music. She is the only female musician to have three albums certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America and is also the second best-selling artist in Canada, behind fellow Canadian Céline Dion, with three of her studio albums being certified double diamond by the Canadian Recording Industry Association. Twain has sold over 80 million albums worldwide, including 49 million in the U.S. She is ranked as the 10th best-selling artist of the Nielsen SoundScan era, with approximately 34 million in sales through April 2008. She was also ranked the 72nd Artist of the 2000–10 decade by Billboard. Most recently, Twain will have her own series, Why Not? with Shania Twain, that premiered on the OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network on May 8, 2011.
